Seeds & Roots Thobe

Let us reimagine Tatreez: Rather than solely seeking a personal connection to ancestry, may our hands work in solidarity, intertwining fate and fabric with Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank.

Currently, I’m crafting a thobe for a young girl from Gaza, drawing from my own childhood thobe, the garment my aunt Taleea lovingly embroidered for me. I wish to call this dress the ‘Seeds & Roots Thobe’ and I strive for it act as a vessel of dignity, care, and resilience passed down through generations, especially vital amid the fractures of displacement & profound loss.

With it, I hope to spark a shift among fellow Tatreez embroiderers—inviting them not only to honour tradition, but to focus their creativity on nurturing girls and women in Gaza who have been stripped of the thobes anchoring them to their own histories and to our land.

Each thobe offered is a seed. In gifting it to a displaced Palestinian, we extend the hope that its wearer will one day lay down new roots, and from them, bloom anew.
